Michelle Worrall Tilton has devoted her career to media liability insurance and managing risk for media companies. In 1998, she founded and served as President and Claims Counsel for First Media Insurance Specialists, Inc. —a national and international media liability underwriting and claims Managing General Agency for large insurers, including SAFECO and ACE. At First Media, she was responsible for product development, marketing, policy drafting and supervising claims. In 2005, she sold First Media to OneBeacon Professional Insurance where she served as Vice President and Media Liability Product Manager until 2010. Prior to founding First Media, Michelle was Claims Counsel at Media/Professional Insurance, which is the nation’s largest underwriter of media insurance and which was founded by her father, Larry Worrall.
Michelle has served as chair of the Media, Privacy and Defamation Torts Committee of the Tort, Trial and Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association and co-chair of the Women in Communications Law Committee of the ABA Forum on Communications Law. She is currently program chair of the Media & Law Committee of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association and serves as co-chair of the Missouri Bar Association’s Insurance Programs Committee–a position she has held for more than 15 years and for which she received a President’s Award from the Missouri Bar in 2000. In 2006, Michelle received the Kirsten Christophe Award from the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section of the ABA for excellence in tort, trial and insurance.
Michelle holds degrees in both journalism and law from the University of Kansas. She is also a licensed property and casualty insurance agent and is a frequent speaker on media and intellectual property insurance, insurance coverage issues and risk management.
